There is a kid I once knew who loved episode 1 more than any other because it was bright, colorful, and funny (in his eyes) and hated 5 the most because 'the ending was stupid and bad and it was boring'. He saw all six (at the time) movies on a relatively frequent basis. Time passed. Now-a-days he hates 1 the most because he feels it's silly, annoying, and Jar-Jar while loving 5 the most. His views did a complete 180 as he grew older and learned what makes for good movies and bad movies.

A fine example of IRL character development. Nice.

For that kid the big watershed moment was watching Spirited Away. When he was done he asked me why it was that his favorite moment was the bit where they clean up the water spirit despite it 'being a stupid movie about girls' and I explained to him that it's the difference between running around all day playing tag and having a tender Christmas Eve with the family by the fireplace. Action, bright lights, cheesy jokes, and the like are fine, but what matters most is making sure that the moment has meaning. He was getting older so I asked him what the difference between dangling keys over a baby and spending time building a massive fort in Minecraft was. He started to say that the former was stupid but then he stopped and I think it clicked for him then. I haven't seen him in a few years now but when I last saw him he'd grown a lot as a person since that day.
