It's just something about the Final Fantasy brand I think, and maybe just the long tradition and history of this particular contest. I can't imagine there being any sort of big drama involving characters that aren't just the ones allowed into this contest as it is now. Not that there's really a ton of drama anymore I suppose, but there's still really high levels of participation and effort put into winning this.
