It's past time for the Death Penalty to be abolished. There's too much risk of getting it wrong for it to be worth it.

People have a great misunderstanding of forensic science, in large part thanks to television shows like CSI. DNA evidence is not infallible. Samples can be contaminated, either on purpose or by accident. Adam Scott is one such example of a man who was charged with Raping a woman -- only, he was 200 miles away at the time. A lab technician reused a plastic plate with Scott's DNA on it. The sample was contaminated. Fortunately, it was caught before Scott was convicted. But if it hadn't -- Scott would've went to jail for a crime he could not have committed. Simply because he was involved with another case (which involved spitting on someone -- which does not usualy carry the same sentence as Rape, maybe the case of Brock Turner notwithstanding)

A Death sentence is irreversible. Once the sentence is carried out, it cannot be undone. All the evidence in the world could come in and exonerate them, and nothing could be done other than clearing their name.

In any case, the justice system should not be about making people suffer. It should be about two things: Rehabilitation and public safety. Some people can never be released from prison without putting the public at risk. But those people are better left in prison, left to think about what they've done for the remainder of their lives. Revenge and Justice are not the same things. Revenge may make us feel better in the short term, but in the long term it does very little good, and potentially a lot of damage to ourselves.
