Plenty of conservatives love the environment. Why do you think so many live in the country and partake in outdoor recreation?

They just don't like the government.

Surely the free market will fix it. Ethical consumers would rather do hours of research and pay top dollar to purchase environmentally sustainable goods. It's worked for thousands of years, why would communists force the government to intervene when corporations and governments are killing the planet. Don't they know that will just create inefficiency? No company would ever use up so much of a natural resource that it disappears, that just doesn't make business sense.

Parody aside, there are solutions to these problems and conservatives don't even want to address them. We can have strict regulations, market solutions (carbon tax, vouchers, tax breaks/subsidies, et cetera), promote more sustainable industries, do more research into long term sustainability, and more. But, the time to do that has passed. It's not just that conservatives won't address climate change, they won't address almost any environmental issue unless it becomes a problem that directly affects them. Conservatism is the party of addressing the symptom, not the disease. They would rather waste money fixing problems they've created than use money proactively to avoid problems.
