I've been watching films by Mamoru Oshii, particularly his Kerberos Panzer Cop series. The guy is just brilliant at mixing elements of tech-noir with offbeat surrealist humor. A lot of folks wouldn't care for the pacing but I love slow as fuck movies.

I gotta start watching more anime movies (Angel's Egg is near the top, priority-wise!). Only ones I've seen from start to finish were My Neighbor Totoro, Paprika, Pokmon: The First Movie and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light. Also ordered Akira on eBay last month but the seller never shipped it out.

I also watched half of Perfect Dark the summer of last year, but that experience was kind of a disaster; I'd bought the DVD since they've still yet to release it in Blu Ray in America, and I originally started to watch the dub but then decided a minute or two in that I'd better watch the original with subtitles instead. I went to the main menu & changed the settings, and the first thing I noticed was how god damned ugly the subtitles were - big, blocky yellow letters with a crude, thick and equally blocky black outline; it was like the bottom of the screen was a construction site. Because of this I ended up oscillating between the two versions probably a dozen times (maybe even more). Eventually I settled on the subbed version, only for the movie to fucking FREEZE at the elevator scene; it was at this point I gave up, but the DVD back in its disc & decided to wait for it to come out on Blu Ray.

I still need to see Angel's Egg. I might try to get to it tonight.

The ugly subtitle thing is a problem I've had to grit my teeth and bear quite a few times, especially with rarer films. I'd be a videophile if I could afford to, but dammit, there are movies that are only available in shitty formats and I'll take what I can get.
