That makes me feel so old.

I came home from working night shift, played video games for a bit and as soon as I shut the system off, I saw the coverage from Tom Brokaw. It wasn't too long after the first plane had hit.

I thought it was fake at first. Once that second plane hit, it sunk in just how real it was

I was driving for work, and saw the smoke column rising in the distance behind the nearby skyline. I just assumed it was a local warehouse fire or something until people on the radio all started talking about it, and it was like, what the fuck.

Then it was mostly just a question of hanging around radios for the rest of the day and trying to figure out what the hell was going on. And being one of those people who spent hours trying to call people they knew on their cell phones (and jamming cell phone lines in the process), because I knew a lot of people from or in southern Manhattan at the time. My GF lived in the city at the time, and could easily have been close enough to have gotten caught in it (she lived about 2 miles away).

Fortunately no one I knew was hurt or killed. Though just living in the city was kind of hellish for months afterward (my GF actually became a vegetarian for about a year or so because, in her words, "It kind of turns my stomach to even think about eating meat when all I can smell in the air is burnt chemicals and dead bodies"), and who knows how many people are going to have lung cancer issues or whatever later in life just from breathing in that air for months after.
