I'd call coming out as gay an accomplishment, given the likelihood that you incur hardship by doing so. Less so for young people today, since the movement as a whole has accomplished a lot in that regard, but we're still very much not at a point where nobody has to fear coming out. The concept of being proud to be openly gay is valid, and since you can't really express pride in being gay without also being openly gay, the transitive property validates gay pride.
