I usually try to be a generous tipper, but there was one time when me and two friends went to a restaurant that had been open for about 6 months. Id been there twice previously with bad service, but this one took the cake. In the hour we were there, the server came to our table twice (one for our initial order - beverages - and once to bring us the drinks). We couldnt get her attention ever to come over by us, nor could we get anyone else to assist us when wed get their attention (theyd say theyd find out server, but would then disappear).

After an hour (and only one round of drinks), we finally found her and said we wanted the bill. Only when she rang up one of our credit cards, she overcharged it. It took another 30 minutes for her to fix it. While she was trying to fix it, she came back and asked Can I get you a round of free drinks to make up for this? We said no, we just wanted to be done with all of this, and her response was Well just remember that I offered you free drinks and you refused them.

Thats when we decided she wasnt getting a bad tip, she was getting no tip. Only time Ive only done that. And it would suck if someone in a prominent position made us out to be the bad guys in this case when it was truly bad service. Who knows, the ripper could definitely be a jerk, but its unfair for a person with influence to just point the finger without all the background info.
