The game prides itself on gun realism, so damage to an animal is based on where it is hit (naturally, like almost any game) with a comparison of Kinetic Energy Vs. either penetration limit or break limit

Any organ that is penetrated is a sure kill, but if you score a hit that doesn't penetrate (like using birdshot) it will just count as a generic body shot (zone 16).

Any bone that is broken may also result in a kill, but lack of penetration robs you of a hit, dealing much less damage to the general body zone. (such as an anemic round deflecting off a skull)
