Bail is usually only denied under certain circumstances, such as the individual being a flight risk. Whether he sits in prison awaiting trial or is at home awaiting trial, he's going to spend the same amount of time in a jail if he's convicted (which, if you do something in a place with dozens of witnesses and admit to having done it, he's pretty much guaranteed to be found guilty) because the time spent in jail beforehand counts as time served.
