The states with more restrictive gun laws see fewer homicides, while those with less gun restrictions are among the most dangerous states in the country. Correlation doesn't equal causation, though. Those states tend to have higher average incomes and better access to healthcare, whereas states with less gun control also tend to be states that didn't take the Medicaid expansion and have lower average incomes, which limits people's ability to access mental health services. There are more issues at play in shootings than just mental illness, of course--there are cultural issues, political issues, even economic issues, to name a few.
