They just don't work together. I suggest going there for a year (since you don't have a job here anyway, and it sounds like you can find something there). I don't think you'd regret trying, since (1) you liked the place well enough on visits, (2) overseas teaching probably looks good on a resume(?), and (3) it's probably better than always wondering "what if I had gone to Portugal with her?"
