TopicIT is probably going to go down as the best adaptation of a King novel.

Shawshank, Greenmile and The Shining are probably much better ones. Still a great one however.

The shining is a godawful adaptation. Good movie, awful adaptation.

I disagree, but welcome to your opinion. I know many consider it a horrendous adaptation, when I still feel it comes across in the same "creepy, slowly going insane" vibe.

The problem is in the characters. The Shining is supposed to be about a troubled but caring father slowly succumbing to his demons. In the movie, Jack is just straight asshole from the beginning, there's no real descent.

That's fair.

I guess I just don't mind as he still goes insane anyway, and the film is pretty great regardless.

It's meant to be a parable of sorts for King's alcoholism.

Through that lens it's pretty easy to see why he hates the movie.

It's a really personal story.
