thor is his name, not a title

Well you say that...

Yeah. As I mentioned earlier, there've been like six different people in the comics who "became" Thor. Mainly because "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

It varies just how much being able to pick up the hammer makes you like Thor - usually the most you get is a similar outfit but people still call you by your own name (like Beta Ray Bill). But in at least one case the person who got it apparently wound up looking so much like the original Thor that literally everyone just called him Thor, and assumed he WAS the original Thor, even though he acted different (because he was a modern man from Earth and not an ancient Asgardian). And sometimes you get someone who everyone knows ISN'T actually Thor, but since they have the powers of Thor and sort of look a bit like Thor and kind of serve as a symbol of what Thor represents, everyone just calls them Thor anyway. So Thor is essentially both a name AND a title.

It was only really asinine when they decided that Thor stopped being Thor when someone else became Thor, so that they could be even more progressive when they introduced a new female Thor with almost no narrative justification or reason (because Tumblr-pandering). But that was hardly the worst part of that run (that might be the shitty memes, or throwing tantrums on Twitter because OMGTHEPATRIARCHY).

Though, speaking of which...

Natalie Portman, obviously

Was honestly my first thought. Would have mentioned it earlier if not for the fact that she's supposedly not on good terms with Marvel/Disney (part of why she hasn't come back for any films post-Thor 2 - that was the film where the problems started). After all, they've already done that shitty storyline in the comics, there's no reason why they couldn't do it in the films as well.

But Valkyrie is the blatantly obvious choice for that shitty storyline in the films. Partly because he's effectively already handed her his authority in a somewhat forced scenario, and partly because she's the only warrior-like Asgardian left to hand it off to in the films since they killed Siff and the Warriors Three off already. But also party because Tessa Thompson gives them a triple jackpot on the diversity bingo card. And partly because Tessa Thompson has apparently been pushing behind the scenes for an all-female Avengers movie (hence the overly forced scene in Endgame that basically telegraphs it).

The only other real options would be to have Loki reform and wind up with it (which seems kind of ridiculous), or to give it to a completely new human character and have them try to do the double-life thing (like Thor's original comic stories, or the stories in the 90s with Eric Masterson), which would be kind of risky if everybody winds up hating the new guy.
