yes, but when you have a major main character such as thor, they aren't going to pull a DC and just recast him as someone else and just act as if he wasn't recast

They might. People were already talking about whether they should recast Iron Man and Cap themselves, but most people kind of erred on the side of Chris Evans and RDJ's portrayals being just too iconic to ever really accept anyone else in their roles. Thor probably straddles the line of what is and isn't acceptable - but I can see them recasting almost any other character (other than maybe Star-Lord) if they need to.

And as the franchise continues to run for decades to come, they're either absolutely going to NEED to eventually, or they're going to have to keep finding less and less justifiable ways to write characters out of the setting (or just start killing them all off).

But arguably, they wouldn't even need to recast if Hemsworth doesn't want to come back. There've literally been at least six different "Thors" in the comics. Plus another half-dozen if you start counting alternate universe "What If?" versions.

And honestly, pretty much every comic geek would suffer spontaneous nerdgasm if they made a movie about Beta Ray Bill (aka Beta Ray Thor, "Horse Thor", or "Thorse").
