#414:

Finally tried that new Gauntlet. Really not liking it much so far. Unlike Legends & Dark Legacy, the playstyles/mechanics for each character seems dramatically different.

I started by playing as the Elven Archer whose dialogue annoyed me enough in the early minutes that I had already considered changing characters. Me being me, I decided to skip the instructions because I figured I'd played other titles in the series and things *should* be similar. To my immediate annoyance, I couldn't figure out how to attack. Apparently the Elf doesn't have a melee attack so you just use the right stick to shoot. Out of the four heroes, he and the Wizard seem to be the only ones with real ranged attacks (other than potions). He was really easy to play with at first, since I'd just strafe while running circles around enemies (or forcing them through choke points where I could range them in a row), but as soon as I got into tighter areas I began to quickly die.

Next up, I gave the Valkyrie a try. The Valkyrie apparently has several melee attacks and the right stick controls a shield effect (I kept trying to attack with it before realizing that it was just a defensive move). The shield was useful for some larger enemies and for protection when I got swarmed (and the shield throw was useful for when I had a cluster of enemies). I think I struggled through the first stage with her, although I died a few times. One of the big things I disliked was how hard it was to take down generators with her.

The Wizard I straight-up couldn't figure out. That I'm going to need to go back on. Apparently he has an array of elemental spells which are triggered via the face buttons and/or combos of the face buttons, after which you use the right stick for some attacks. Unlike the others, his play-style seems fairly complex, which brings us to... the Warrior.

I had been tempted to play as the Warrior from the get-go, given that he and the Archer were my go-to classes in Legends (or their alt forms, the Minotaur and Tigress). As soon as I started playing as the Warrior, things seemed a bit easier. He has no ranged attacks or defensive abilities (although he has this weird dash I still don't have a hang of), but his spinning special attack was good for breaking through mobs when I started to get swarmed. Even then, the game didn't feel like a cakewalk. The first few levels of Legends were absurdly easy, but I was still quickly dying if I got careless.

I also don't like the look of the game. Legends had a cooler, cartoonish style to things with larger, most distinct-looking characters. Gauntlet 2014 has a drastically different look although, when I googled an image, it doesn't look quite as bad. Maybe it's because the light under your character isn't there in the solo campaign so they look less distinct?

Also, risking spoilers, I wound up looking up the boss list... and apparently there are only 3-4 bosses (assuming that the sword is a separate boss fight), which is pretty lame. The giant bosses were my favorite part of Legends/Dark Legacy.
