The AfroFuture music and arts festival has caused an uproar after it was found to be selling tickets at different prices based on the color of the purchasers skin. Early bird tickets were sold in two options, POC, for people of color, tickets priced at $10 and NONPOC tickets priced at $20, with regular ticket prices also selling POC for $20 and NON-POC for $40.

The reasoning for this pricing scheme was explained in the FAQs as promoting equality, stating:

Why do we have POC (people of colour) and Non-POC (white people) tickets? I'm glad you asked! Equality means treating everyone the same.

Equity is insuring (sic) everyone has what they need to be successful. Our ticket structure was built to insure (sic) that the most marginalised communities (people of colour) are provided with an equitable chance at enjoying events in their own community (black Detroit).

Despite a somewhat commonly held belief that marginalized communities cannot be racist this action is almost certainly in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is not clear if there are any measures in place to confirm the race of the purchaser.

Rapper Tiny Jag has pulled out from the event in protest calling it non-progressive and not solution-focused.
