Three days later, you return to the cave, along with Katrina and Ad Avis. She orders you to perform the five rituals in the side chambers to begin the summoning. And then, in the final chamber, Ad Avis finally betrays her. Something about the sequence of events has broken his bonds to her and he attacks. The two trade spells, to no effect, since they are both adept at magical defense, until Ad Avis decides that he knows Katrina's real weakness. He targets you with a spell instead, and she desperately flings herself in the spell's path to protect you. It kills her instantly.

At that point, you have to defeat Ad Avis, which you do through outsmarting him, and terminate the summoning ritual. In Quest for Glory V, which came out many years later, you have the option of reuniting with several of the female characters you've interfaced with over your adventures, most of whom are now dead. One of them is Katrina, who has been dragged to Hades and remembers nothing but her love for you, wishing only that she could be held. I haven't played V, so the wiki is a better source of info for this than me.

Many gamers think of there first gaming crush fondly, whether that's Tifa or Lara or some other beloved female character. I doubt there are very many who think back on Katrina this way, just because she was from a more niche game, but I was 13 at the time of the game's release and have memories of those moments outside the town gates where she gradually acclimates to you.

Katrina is alluring, mysterious, and exotic. She's also completely self-centered and devastatingly lonely, and her need to fill the second is what ultimately redeems her from the first. Yes, she intends to doom the world by summoning Avoozl for her own (rather short-sighted) aims, but she ultimately sacrifices that for you just for being the first person to show her any kind of real human affection.
