Thompson. I watched this movie for the first time when I was probably 14 or so and I can't believe I was able to take anything away from it. It's essentially a cinematic version of intoxication. Aside from the general hallucinatory quality of the film, we also get two of the best performances of the 90s from Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. They are spectacular at bringing two deranged caricatures to life and really make the movie more than just drug fantasy porn. But what really elevates it most is the brief window toward the end where Hunter/Depp narrates about the Summer of Love in the midst of the fallout from that lifestyle.
