Republicans go to low-income Americans on bended knee, ask them what they want, and promise to give it to them. Democrats are too aloof to talk to them much and when they do, they deliver lectures about how the Democratic Party is acting in their best interests. There should be no surprise which strategy gets the votes. I think republicans speak to people's successes as being earned solely through individual merit, and democrats are more likely to speak about the successes as being achieved through the efforts of society.
