#187. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ce/Smith_goes.jpg
Dir: Frank Capra
Genre: Drama
Year: 1939

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was truly a film of another era in Hollywood. The idealism was in-your-face, but still not off-putting like it always seems to be today. It's melodramatic without being corny and triumphant without seeming cliched. Chalk it up to a legendary director and a GOAT-worthy performance in Jimmy Stewart I guess, but we'll never see anything quite like it.

This movie also, in a weird way, feels a bit more modern than its year would imply. I don't mean that it feels contemporary, but it seems very edgy for a 1939 political drama. Perhaps that's why it has the legacy it has, but Mr. Smith is certainly still thoroughly enjoyable to this day.
