"Seeming" being the key word. Which of course is exactly what the question was intended to do. To trick people into giving the answer they wanted so they could go "OMG Americans are such bigots!" Most would have answered the question the same way no matter what they called the numbers. They think it's a new set of numbers. A second set to be added to what we already use. And there's no reason to be adding a new set of numbers when everyone uses the ones that we already know.

I'd wager that a good portion of the people who voted yes had no idea what Arabic numerals were (I didn't know that's what they were called) and only voted yes so they wouldn't look like bigots.
