But this doesn't proof bigotry in any way. Just uninformed people who responding to a trick question. The people responding aren't saying no because of the word Arabic. They're saying no because they think it's a different set of numerals. An additional set to what we already have.

But by not understanding the question they are seeming to be jumping straight to the Arab = bad mindset instead of the smaller number of people who voted no opinion.

I'd be against teaching Arabic numerals in American schools, because it's a historical mistake and classical ethnocentrism to call them Arabic numerals in the first place. They were invented in India.

We only call them Arabic numerals because that's who the Europeans were killing when they stole them.

"Seeming" being the key word. Which of course is exactly what the question was intended to do. To trick people into giving the answer they wanted so they could go "OMG Americans are such bigots!" Most would have answered the question the same way no matter what they called the numbers. They think it's a new set of numbers. A second set to be added to what we already use. And there's no reason to be adding a new set of numbers when everyone uses the ones that we already know.

I'd wager that a good portion of the people who voted yes had no idea what Arabic numerals were (I didn't know that's what they were called) and only voted yes so they wouldn't look like bigots.

Yeah, no. My knowledge of that was extracurricular.

Let's also remember that they're not even arabic to begin with, it's just attributed to them because it was arab merchants that brought it our way. It's something like Indian numbers in arab areas, we don't even know the origin.

that's only a "trick question" if you suffer from severe brain damage. You only had to complete the first grade to know what that question meant. It doesn't have to mean bigotry, only severe idiocy. However if you replace "Arabic" with, for example "Spanish" then yea

Kind of deceptive not to provide an example and then claim bigotry when people vote no.

The poll probably could have said space Cthulhu numbers and people probably would have voted no, simply based on the fact that people don't want more than one kind of number to have to learn.

I think prejudice is a large leap here.

This. It's not even about the "Arabic" part (although I don't doubt that a decent amount of folk had a knee-jerk reaction based on it). If you don't know what it is, you should find out and see if it has any academic merit before answering "no."

Pretty much. This doesn't prove that 56% of Americans are racist, it proves that (at least) 56% of Americans are too stupid to ask for clarification on a concept they don't understand before providing their opinion on it. If the question were fishing for racism, the question should have been more along the lines of "Recent polls suggest that over 97% of American schools are teaching children how to read Arabic numerals. Do you think this is a problem?", but even then you're still going to get people who presume "Arabic numerals" is referring to an additional number system and object on that basis.
