There's a difference between playing games and being a gamer, much like there's a difference in being a rasta or just liking a good spliff. There's a culture surrounding it that defines it as much as the action.

According to the dictionary, a gamer is:

a person who plays video games or participates in role-playing games.

If words are supposed to mean what they mean, and it's an arbitrary distinction then so is someone who plays games and 'gamer'.

Your comparison feels weird to me too, tbh. Rastafarianism has to do with religion, and makes it feel a bit like being a 'gamer' is being taken a bit too seriously.
