The rapier wasn't a terrible civilian weapon, but it wasn't a terribly practical side-arm for battle although *most* swords didn't perform terribly well vs armored opponents.

Romans are the only military I can think of off the top of my head who used a sword as a main weapon. Basically any other time swords were just toys for nobility.

A lot of cultures without strong armor tended to use it as a main weapon. And it was widely used as a military sidearm throughout history, which is a bit more than just a toy for the nobility =p

yeh, like using a pointy stick was better.

More economical, better range, etc.

I've balanced a sabre on my head for belly dance. Mostly in martial arts tournaments I use a fu dan dau, tiger's broadsword, sometimes a jian. For stage combat, I don't think anything looks as good as a nice katana, single-edged so versatile for moves like Steel Fan and Silat Spin, although double broadswords are fun and flashy.

A jian looks way better than a katana for that =x
