For example, even though I am mostly into heavy metal, punk, and a little bit of 90's rock, I also like swing music.

I think the main reason is I was a clarinet player in high school, and outside of orchestra it is the last genre of music where it used to be featured prominently. I always wanted to be in jazz band but they never had any clarinet arrangements and I was forced to play sax instead. Closest I ever got to playing a real swing song was when my school marching band played "Sing Sing Sing" as part of it's set for a season, but it didn't even have the solo sections, just the main part.

It seems odd because no one in my family or circle of friends was into it (closest was my grandfather, but he preferred more typical jazz music), it was just something I was into. My favorite artists in the genre are definitely Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Louis Jordan. I also like the more modern revival bands like Cherry Poppin' Daddies and The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

So yea, what are some odd musical tastes you have that seem completely out of left field?

You should definitely check out the Squirrel Nut Zippers. I think they're 100 times better than the "you can beat me but you'll never beat me" Daddies though I agree Setzer is pretty cool. They can play for real and have very interesting / non-generic compositions.

For myself I'm huge into prog like Rush and Dream Theater but also love Primus, Nomeansno, Midnight Oil, Prince, The Fixx..... and Shonen Knife hah. In the 80s I listened to a lot of Public Enemy and somehow got into Slayer for a while too (had Seasons in the Abyss in the rotation for a long-ass time)

But hell even friggin Garth Brooks has some good shit!

I think it helps you grow as a musician if you learn to appreciate many different types of music.
