For example, even though I am mostly into heavy metal, punk, and a little bit of 90's rock, I also like swing music.

I think the main reason is I was a clarinet player in high school, and outside of orchestra it is the last genre of music where it used to be featured prominently. I always wanted to be in jazz band but they never had any clarinet arrangements and I was forced to play sax instead. Closest I ever got to playing a real swing song was when my school marching band played "Sing Sing Sing" as part of it's set for a season, but it didn't even have the solo sections, just the main part.

It seems odd because no one in my family or circle of friends was into it (closest was my grandfather, but he preferred more typical jazz music), it was just something I was into. My favorite artists in the genre are definitely Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Louis Jordan. I also like the more modern revival bands like Cherry Poppin' Daddies and The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

So yea, what are some odd musical tastes you have that seem completely out of left field?

I quite dislike hip-hop music but every now and then there's a song to which I take a shining. Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" is an example.

Pretty much anybody who played GTA Vice City and San Andreas developed eclectic music tastes that span genres, at least to some degree.

I feel like most people assume I like only hard rock and/or metal music based on my long hair. While I do like both of those genres, I think that most wouldn't think that I like Japanese music. And while J-Rock is in fact rock, it's not considered the same for some reason. I do also like J-Pop though so that probably seems weird.

If you look at my background and non musical interests, its probably weird that I listen to country as much as I do, given how much of it is christian (i'm a life-long atheist), focused on stuff I really have no interest in (rodeos, cowboys, trucks, hunting, fishing) or from a background that I don't share (small town life, I grew up in tampa bay)

Honestly, it would probably make more sense if I was more into metal, given that a lot of it is about fantasy, which is something i've loved my whole life.

I almost broke down in tears when I heard Making Love out of Nothing at All on the radio.

It was a pretty shitty day at school and I was driving back home at night on the interstate with the roads lit up like a stadium, and it just gave me this feeling that I was the center of the spotlights in my own journey

I just looked them up and I can't say I like them much although I only went through a couple of songs for each so it is a bit unfair to judge them solely on that. They were a bit too simple and unoriginal for me although I did like Bounce Patrol's videos. There's always something entertaining about watching these people dance about like they do.

Haha. Listen to me being some kind of snob about kids music.

I dont really have any in all honesty. My musical tastes form a clear chain of progression down the punk(and related subgenres) from my first favorite band, The Offspring, to Bad Religion, to Minor Threat, to Husker Du, to everything in between, then offshoot genres like math rock and some others. Nothing is weird in my general rotation.

However I guess since I listen to enough popular music by default because my best friend listens to it and you hear it everywhere anyways, I can get down with some artists like taylor swift. I'd never bother to listen to it on my own but when its on I can appreciate the standard fare of generic popular music.

That likely isnt impressive but none of the music I routinely listen to is weird since its all punk and its related subgenres.

You should definitely check out the Squirrel Nut Zippers. I think they're 100 times better than the "you can beat me but you'll never beat me" Daddies though I agree Setzer is pretty cool. They can play for real and have very interesting / non-generic compositions.

For myself I'm huge into prog like Rush and Dream Theater but also love Primus, Nomeansno, Midnight Oil, Prince, The Fixx..... and Shonen Knife hah. In the 80s I listened to a lot of Public Enemy and somehow got into Slayer for a while too (had Seasons in the Abyss in the rotation for a long-ass time)

But hell even friggin Garth Brooks has some good shit!

I think it helps you grow as a musician if you learn to appreciate many different types of music.

Raised on classic rock, glam, metal, Hip Hop and later alt, grunge, and hippy hop.

But I have a real soft spot for trip hop and certain female vocalists/bands.

Morcheeba, Rasputina, Joss Stone, Regina Spektor, Moonraker, Nora Jones, Portishead, Goldfrapp, Rachel Kann. That sort of thing.

But my music collection looks like a tornado hit St Mark's place to begin with, but yeah, I have guilty pleasures.

Anyone that used to follow my scrobbles or any of the WAYLT topics on the old spinoff boards would be hard pressed to see any rhyme or reason to my musical tastes from day to day.

To be fair, I think most country music is godawful in every important respect...but I do have a soft spot for a Garth track or 2 and I'll fight a man in the street for speaking ill of Johnny Cash.

Yeah, now that you mention it, Johnny Cash is also definitely one of my guilty pleasures.

The sitar is a pleasing instrument to the ear, and I give George Harrison a lot of credit for trying to adopt it.

But it's kind of like a theremin. You have to be REALLY, REALLY careful if you're going to mix lyrics into a sitar or theremin piece.

Hopefully gamefaq's doesn't auto-embed this post, going to post a lot of links of the stuff I listened to growing up and the stuff I listen to that people wouldn't think I listen to.

I grew up listening to a lot of Breakcore, HappyHardcore, Gabber, and Drum n Bass growing up, but then after graduating from highschool I mellowed out and started listening to Downtempo artists like Tycho and Boards of Canada.

Examples in order of what I listened to growing up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRL4TG3ZT-4" data-time="
(Breakcore early to late 1990s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOyONEbMiio" data-time="
(HappyHardcore late 1990s to early 2000s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKZ4RpOEfko" data-time="
(Gabber early 2000s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KPcgootqBw" data-time="
(DnB mid to late 2000s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv491owMpnI" data-time="
(Tycho late 2000s and beyond)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMRLlSPt7ak" data-time="
(Boards of Canada late 2000s and beyond)

Needless to say my music interests have always been a bit strange lol. I don't listen to as much of the constantly high energy music I used to when I was younger but most of what I listen to on a daily basis is still considered EDM of some sort.

But as for music that people probably wouldn't think I'm into, I have quiet a few albums of instrumental stuff. Although I don't listen to it often or in public, only a few people know I listen to this music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qg3Z69MxxQ" data-time="&start=314
(The Bad Plus, seen these guys live once & have their albums)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eClWlmr0-U" data-time="
(Toe, have all of their albums and EPs)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InwpnYzEmVc" data-time="&start=2427
(65 Days of Static, wish I could see them live but they never play anywhere near me at all - I have all their albums)

Oh yea, I love the Zippers, that is actually what I meant when I said Cherry Poppin' Daddies. For some reason I always get their names mixed up although if I heard them side by side I certainly like the Zippers more. The Daddies are more of a Ska band that have some Swing-like songs.
