My advice on roomates.

If you have the time, and any decent friends at all, try and be roomates with people you already know/hang out with and like.

When I was in my 20's I had a core group of 10 friends, we would hang out every weekend, we went to the second ever burning man together, started playing Magic the Gathering when it first came out etc. We pretty much spent any free time we had together. Everyone had other friends as well that would sometimes join in, which made for a very large group of causal friends for everyone.

Anyway, 3 of us core friends rented a 2 bedroom (Back then it was $600 for it) and split the cost 3 ways. We converted the living room into a seperate bedroom (had a makeshift wall that still gave privacy), and bam, $200 each per month was pretty awesome.

Do that if you can, don't go with random roomates unless you absolutely have to. Rent from any apartment comples that has 3 bedrooms and your current rate today should be under $400 each, unless you live in a few very expensive areas (or you go for a really nice apartment complex).

It's easy, safe, fun (if you actually like your friends) and super cheap.
