America wasn't really a superpower until after World War I, at the earliest (and it wasn't really obvious until after World War II). And it had less to do with anything in particular we were doing, and more to do with Europe being really stupid and implementing socialism. And also freely giving away their colonial dominions in the name of social justice or whatever.
