Go back far enough and the X-Men weren't that popular (the book was almost canceled back in the 60s), and for the last decade or so they've basically been squelched in favor of the Avengers due to movie rights issues. And even when they WERE on top, some kids were more DC than Marvel (especially during the Batman/Superman/Justice League era of the DCAU).
