@Reg

Im not 100% sure, but I think this is the first shounen series I watched after I actually got into anime? Perhaps not coincidentally, its still one of my favorites (theres one ahead of it on this list, but that might be the only fighting shounen I like more). It has a lot of issues, but I avoided the most notable one by stopping watching it after episode 62 (the end of the Kyoto arc), so I didnt get to enjoy filler hell. The Tokyo arc is a bit overly fillery too, but theres still good stuff in the there. Kenshins a cool protagonist, and all the guys who join the team are pretty solid as well. There are enjoyable mini-arcs here and there, and the show is basically just fun. But the Kyoto arc is the real reason to watch this. Im not sure if Ive ever seen such a stark transition between arcs before. We go from mediocre animation and a relatively happy-go-lucky atmosphere to incredible detail, way more style, and a far darker atmosphere in just one episode. I also read the manga for Kenshin, and while Tokyos certainly better there, the anime blows the manga away for Kyoto.

The cast of villains is excellent. Some of the early villains are solid, but all the Kyoto villains are a ton of fun. Saito kind of starts out as a villain, and is one of the coolest characters in the anime. Shishios crew is all fun too. They have unique abilities to make for interesting fights and most of them are given solid backgrounds as well. They feel like real people, which is nice for shounen anime villains. My favorite was the fight with Seta, which used sound and animation in a pretty unique way. Everything moves along at a good pace, the show builds to great climaxes, and its all presented very well. Such a great arc. The following arc in the Trust and Betrayal OVA was fantastic as well. Its a shame the anime never did Jinchuu, but that arc wasnt as good as what preceded it anyway. Definitely worth watching for any shounen fighting fans, as long as they stop at the end of the good stuff.
