Write-Up:
Blah. That's the one word I give my wife every time she says she loves this song. (She selected it for the ranking btw) But yeah... heard it too much and other than the message of the song, I don't really care for much else. I find the rhythm to be a mixed bag of up and down but know for sure that the inconsistency bugs me. Does anyone else find the vocals a bit whiny like I do? Maybe it's the lead singer's voice that bugs me I dunno. I haven't heard anything else by Hozier though so I can't be sure about that theory. Hozier actually released their debut album as a free download under a different title before eventually re-releasing it as a self-titled album. Their might be some differences between the two but I wouldn't know if there were. The music video for this song was released before and became responsible for the band getting licensed through Columbia Records which was uncommon but is starting to become more of a thing in the new digital age. Andrew Hozier wrote the song out of frustration with the Catholic Church's teachings and the lyric "Take me to Church" is actually a metaphor comparing the song's protagonist to the religion.
