True, the game had moments of levity. And I think that's fair. I think it's okay to have a side quest with masks, singing frogs, a dancing scarecrow, or minor character who functions as comic relief (not Tingle).

But the general tone was one of adventure with a stalwart protagonist. The visuals had an earthy vibe to them suggesting a quest of great consequence. It had a tone more in line with something like Robin Hood or Lord of the Rings than Mario-with-a-sword or Nintendo's version of Peter Pan.

It'd be like if Super Mario 64 had an almost urban look to it, a sort of faux-grittiness, and then they went right back to the colorful visuals of the Super Nintendo era. It doesn't make sense unless it underperformed.
