I'm also anti gun (would never get one for myself) but yes they are interesting.
I took a firearms safety course when I was 14 and shot 5 or so different kinds of guns and learned about cleaning and handling and stuff. It still says "firearm safety certification" on my driver's license.

I've also been trap shooting a few times.. that was actually pretty fun. My dad has hunting rifles and shotguns locked up somewhere. He pretty much never hunts but we've taken them in the woods and shot targets a couple times.

I have a friend who has a couple handguns and an AR like your cousin. We didn't shoot any but he showed them to me and I held them and stuff. He also showed me this gun he inherited from his grandpa, which was really cool. His grandpa took it off of a japanese soldier in WW2. It looked like this

Does your cousin go to the shooting range with his rifle? I've heard that range time and ammo gets expensive
