Link's Awakening is prototypical for the Oracle games, both of which are mechanically more sophisticated, building on it (with no successor, as TMC is a step or three down while ALBW is a step in a wildly different direction). LA retains a notable place in the fandom because the ideas it wrestles with can be profound if some reading between the lines is performed. The game is simple, but the game world is like an eight hour reverie. Ages has some of the strongest puzzle design in the series and has a functional time travel system. Seasons has plenty of its own tricks independent of Ages, but those don't often receive attention. At any rate, I, too, rank them Ages first, LA second, and Seasons third on those ground, all three games ahead of the rest with ALttP and ALBW trailing next. The 3D games are messes comparatively.
