And probably hasnt played the Oracle games. I'm tired of seeing Link''s Awakening ranked higher, and EVERYONE seems to fall into the trap of doing it! Link's Awakening does have one thing over them - and that's the story. But it's not like the story is mindblowing enough to make it the better game. It's really only the ending that is intriguing.

Anyway. You should play those games. Or at least watch KingK's new retrospective video on them if you don't plan on playing.

Weird take but I have Ages > Awakening > Seasons. I just did not get into Seasons nearly as hard even though it's not really any appreciatively worse.

I've always felt the same way about Seasons. Ages really excelled at presenting the gimmick of cause and effect in history and I was never as drawn in by the seasons presentation. Maybe I was comparing it to Click Clock Woods in Banjo-Kazooie at the time and that's why it didn't impress me.

Seasons and Ages are about a gimmick which is really good, but lackluster story and honestly has worse dungeons overall than Awakening does. Awakening has, imo and probably the opinions of others as well, some of the best 2D dungeons, particularly for Gameboy. It just has a weak final boss. However, I do want to replay both Oracles since I haven't beaten the final boss for either. I'll get to them eventually.

Link's Awakening > Seasons >>> Ages

Ages simply has a boring world and mostly mediocre dungeons. That's way too much for its core mechanic to overcome.

I prefer the overall complexity and density of the Oracle games, but I get that it can feel more sluggish with the extra amount of set pieces and cutscenes and shit.

LA is the purist zelda handheld experience.

I like the oracle games better, but awakening isn't really the same, while the oracles are an all you can eat buffet of features and gimmicks that work incredibly well, awakening is a perfectly portioned piece with a satisfying conclusiom.

I would say don't trust anyone who puts one drastically above the other imhhhhhhho

I definitely don't think the Oracle games are drastically better. I just see a lot of lists ranking the Oracle games in Bottom 3 and Link's Awakening in like, top 3

Oh for sure they dont belong on the bottom three. Twilight princess through spirit tracks was a dark time for zelda (maybe skyward sword too, I didn't play it)

The Oracles are great, if there's another contest, they need to submit the Ganon that is the final boss to the sprite round.

Link's Awakening is prototypical for the Oracle games, both of which are mechanically more sophisticated, building on it (with no successor, as TMC is a step or three down while ALBW is a step in a wildly different direction). LA retains a notable place in the fandom because the ideas it wrestles with can be profound if some reading between the lines is performed. The game is simple, but the game world is like an eight hour reverie. Ages has some of the strongest puzzle design in the series and has a functional time travel system. Seasons has plenty of its own tricks independent of Ages, but those don't often receive attention. At any rate, I, too, rank them Ages first, LA second, and Seasons third on those ground, all three games ahead of the rest with ALttP and ALBW trailing next. The 3D games are messes comparatively.

Oracle of Ages has some good puzzle design but then some that are pretty bad. The Ancient Tomb is incredibly boring and simple and just pales in comparison to Turtle Rock

Half of the interest level of Ancient Tomb is finding it (remember: the Maku Tree offers no hints as to the final Essence's location leaving not one but two overworlds to comb for the eighth dungeon). Then, it's a lot of cross-screen spatial relations as the player navigates merry-go-rounds and crystal barriers. I guess that might be seen as boring since the dungeon item had to be the level two grabber (contrast against Seasons getting the level two jumper). Turtle Rock's best trick involves filling in the floor and finding key bombable walls, as the dungeon item doesn't actually impact design that much here. I find the former more interesting but can see where you're coming from.
