I didn't make that post, but for me it's less that realism makes something that annoys the crap out of me okay and more that realism makes an otherwise annoying role inherently less annoying due to it making sense from a storytelling perspective. So I don't mind John Connor much.

But then again I'm pretty sure I just have a lot more tolerance for annoyance than you given Ariel never came off as annoying to me and I don't even really get that.

(And Tidus is actually legit entertaining and always thought the annoying complaints were kinda twisting the tone and context of the character's dialogue and actions, but it goes without saying I never understood that one)
