There are what, 5-7 international mega companies that control much of global commerce. They just kept all the smaller brand names they swallowed up to give you the illusion of competing companies.

Nestle owns, among other brands: After Eight, Alpo, Arrowhead, Baby Ruth, Blue Bottle Coffee Company, Boost, Buitoni, Butterfinger, California Pizza Kitchen, Calistoga, Carnation, Chipwitch, Coffee-Mate, Deer Park, DiGiorno, Dreyer's, Drumstick, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Gerber, Hagen-Dazs, Hot Pockets, Ice Mountain, Jack's, Lean Cuisine, Maggi, Nescafe, Nesquick, Nestea, Ortega, Perrier, Perugina, Pixy Stix, Poland Spring, Purina, Raisinets, S. Pellegrino, Skinny Cow, Smarties, Stouffer's, Taster's Choice, Toll House, Tombstone, and Wonka. In addition, they own 30% of L'Oral (which owns Garnier, Maybelline and Lancme).

Oh, Im well aware. About 10 minutes away from me is where they make Jacks, Tombstone and Digiorno frozen pizzas. I remember when the whole outfit changed hands from Kraft to Nestle about a decade ago.

Theres a pretty good listing of the others here:

Edit: actually its a little dated (and a blog) since it shows Comcast and Time Warner as separate entities.
