He just sort of viewed the all-white government as adversarial and any white person who wanted to help black people had an ulterior motive for doing so--namely voting for their party of choice. The problem is he's literally right. And not just a small amount of right, but he was pretty much right about everything back then and is still mostly right about it today. He's the kind of person who would be saying that the Democrats put forward Obama as their candidate to con black people into voting for them. He was extremely smart, well educated (mostly all on his own), well informed about current events and active politicians and events all over the country, and very good in a debate.
