I always pictured the character as a girl because it of the title similarity with Kiss Me Kate and, to a lesser extent, Thoroughly Modern Millie. As for the song itself it tells the story of teens living in Sweet Apple, OH, gossiping about this girl named Kim (no relation to Miss Saigon's Kim) who just went steady with her beau. The thing is, she was about to quit the Birdie (a rock star) fan club but found out she was chosen to get Birdie's last kiss before he was drafted to fight the Civil War or something. Though it's a fun way to introduce Kim's situation, the chorus themselves don't really have a shred of personality, which kinda takes away from it. The voices can also be grating, are they simulating teenagers voice breaking? And sometimes the way they deliver the lines are kinda weird. Just not very enjoyable to listen to, at least for me. I like the concept more than the execution. I am sure it's much better on stage and I am intrigued by the staging potential of this song. 60. And while this song is rather funny (at least in the beginning where they pretend West Covina is a medieval village) by the half point I'm just mostly bored, especially because I'm not digging the tune itself. 59. The melody is just simplistic and it's almost catchy but just...not there. Definitely the weakest song in Tangled and sadly its only crowd song. And these randos are probably horrible people and their war crimes are hand waved just because they have ironic dreams? They also get formulaic after a while. Probably should've added one guy whose dream is as horrible as you'd expect.
