Maybe it's symbolic of how Austria will eventually prevail over the Third Reich? Yeah I don't get it. It's just not very theatrical. It could've been some rando peasants singing that song instead AND it could've been any other sloooow ballad song up there, so this song is not very necessary. I think anything else legible from The Sound of Music would have done better in my rankings: My Favorite Things, The Lonely Goatherd, Do-Re-Mi, Maria, and even... So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye Goodbye, Edelweiss!
