I do wonder how many are in good relationship with their family but still move out because they feel it is a "rite of passage". If one can afford it, sure, but at the same time making smart financial decisions is kinda also part of that "rite of passage" of being an adult.

Doing that for this said "rite" sounds like a waste of time and money. I would like to move out because the our current home is too small for all of us. If it wasn't for that, I would probably stay there forever... or until I get kicked out, tho I doubt that would ever happen. Not a lech here btw, I do pay for my water and electricity (and for everyone when we eat out, because we would never do it otherwise...), and I'm almost never at home anyway because of work and studies so it's not that much.

I also find rental to be a waste on the long run, it's better to save enough money to buy a place and never ever having to pay to stay there even though it takes longer to actually being able to do that.
