I just remember Sym-bye-otes from the first trailer and going nope and just turning it of and not really caring about the movie anymore after that...

Apparently they fixed that.

This. Sony is not willing to sell Spider-Man. Disney tried to buy the rights from Sony, and Sony wasn't willing to sell. Sony would only offer a joint-venture with Disney to include Spider-Man in the MCU while Sony kept the actual rights to the character.

Also, this joint-venture is only good for 4 movies. Civil War, Spider-Man Homecoming, Infinity War, and Spider-Man Far From Home. After that, Sony can choose to not renew the deal and keep Spider-Man out of future MCU movies. So actually Venom doing well might not be a good thing for the MCU if Sony now thinks that they can do a successful Spider-Man movie without Disney.

It was because they didn't have their version of Spiderman in it.
