I'm not prepared to write-off the entire genre, but it's not a style that I get into. When it comes to purely instrumental music, I prefer things to be more...artificial? I doubt that's the word I'm looking for, but then, I don't know enough music terms to know what I'm looking for. I enjoy music with a lot of distortions or weird effects that couldn't be created in the past, or sounds from older game systems; the X68000, Game Boy, stuff like that. When it comes to classical music, or VGM that wants desperately to be in that style with their full orchestras or what not, I tend to just tune out. There are exceptions: The Chrono Cross soundtrack is incredibly beautiful and I occasionally play the game just to hear the music again, and I know someone nominated a piece of piano music at another ranking topic that I absolutely loved (though I can't recall the name or any details to ever find it again), but... the less modern or artificial sounding the music, the harder it is for it to hold my attention. Factor in this song's length (over 11 minutes), how it's rather subdued and almost puts me to sleep, and I just can't rank it higher than this. I'm sure it's blasphemy and one of the all-time greats, blah blah blah, but I just can't connect with it at all. [FINAL NOTES: So much competition for last place, but it was the length of this song that killed it. I'd contend the next several songs are worse, but they have the decency to end in a reasonable timeframe.
