I, too, thought most of the events were going to be the result of mental illness in the family that only the father, who was relatively normal, didn't suffer from.

'lo and behold it's a multi-generational plot for a lord of hell to inhabit their preferred gendered body.

I interpreted the blue light to be Paimon himself when attempting to, or directly possessing individuals. I also interpreted that Charlie was involved or partially possessed by Paimon for a long time. I also interpret what happened with Charlie's art book in the fireplace to be a result of Paimon using mischief to manipulate and weaken the resolve of characters (Annie thinks burning the book and killing herself will end the process... Paimon put that idea in her head. Husband dies instead completely breaking her and making her susceptible to possession, enabling Paimon to then directly assault his next target.) I also see Annie's sleepwalking moments as her own maternal instinct to try and stop what is going on without fully understanding it.

Pretty layered and well put together movie.
