Like as has been true for humans for thousands of years (and in spite of what oversensitive assholes may believe today), "it" is the proper terminology to use in English if sex/gender is unknown, but if sex/gender can be inferred from context clues or definitive evidence, "he" or "she" is entirely appropriate unless corrected otherwise (and the onus is on the ambiguous person to provide clarification, not the confused speaker who is being corrected).

A dog is "it" by default, but humans are also "it" or "them" by default. But the moment you know what genitals a dog has (or had, if it was spayed/neutered), it's a "he" or "she" (and fuck you if you're going to try and argue that dogs can be transgendered).

Well, fine. I'm just trying to provoke people who get bent out of shape when you don't take the time to identify their dog's gender, as if it's some heinous slight against them.

Sorry I didn't look between your dog's hind legs before referring to IT.

If you had no reasonable way to know, used the neutral pronoun, and they go pissed, that's on them for being an asshole.

If you had a reasonable expectation of knowing what sex the dog was (because they've mentioned it before, or because it has a blatantly gender-specific sort of name), then it sort of shifts to you being the asshole for insisting on the neutral terminology.

And when an animal is put down, it is not killed- it is destroyed.

No. By definition, any animal, regardless of how simple or complex, is "killed" when you actively end its biological functions. Even germs and bacteria are killed if you spray them with antibacterial cleansers or wipes.

You CAN differentiate between whether killing an animal can be considered "murder" versus simply being killed (and the answer is, it ISN'T murder, no matter how much someone may love their pet), but "destroyed" is just a euphemism people use because they're too uncomfortable to use the actual truth (see also, why militaries often use terms like "terminate" or "neutralize" instead of "murder the fuck out of those insurgents").
