It actually was worse for the consumers because MS actually took responsibility and gave the people extended warranties while Sony didn't give a fuck. Don't try to sugarcoat it. M$ didn't give a damn about it until word started to spread about a 2/3 failure rate, at which point they were forced to offer a multi year warranty to save face. And even then the repair lines were long. Coupled with the thought that a refurb system would be untrustworthy, people ran out to buy a supposedly improved platform and dumped the refurb at GS. Nin and Sony had way lower failure rates and stuck to the industry standard of charging for repairs. Not that I agree with the fees so if I ever run into trouble I clean it or fix at home. I'm proud to say I've only had a single console fail on me - an original PS1. Still have a launch PS2, 60gb PS3. Just gotta clean the dust out once in a while.
