Most of the good anime out there got pretty popular IMO. Usually right under the shonen hype and idol shows in japan. I'm kinda hard pressed to think of anything I thought was really great that ended up being unsuccessful.

It's more a matter of it being the popular stuff that truly makes it big while great shows either fly under the radar or have limited success. The handling of Genshiken is a good example, since it had a first season, then a bunch of OVAs, and then a greatly abridged second season -- which, all things considered, still has a nice cap for the show even if the manga went longer.

That anime was in a LOT of top favorite lists before brotherhood came out.

That bothers me too. It was widely regarded as one of the best anime ever. Then Brotherhood happened and everyone did a 180.

I never thought that highly of the original FMA and had always been surprised by the praise it received. From what I've seen of Brotherhood (and I kinda want to watch at this point), it seems better in every regard.
