Depends on whether he meant to kill him. A man has a right to defend his property against thieves. If he chased the guy down and the thief decided to fight him instead of giving the wallet back, sounds like self-defense. However, if he already had the guy subdued and was taking some revenge, that's not as defensible. (And if the thief dropped the wallet after being attacked and the guy proceeded to deliver some street justice, that shit is approaching outright murder.)
