I've heard that eating right before brushing is bad. There are certain foods which can weaken something on the teeth (I think enamel). And if you brush right after, you can end up removing some of it. Or something like that. So, I think he's doing that the right way...

I think you are referring to acidic foods. Think it was recommended 30 minutes or a hour after eating or drinking something acidic before brushing. Could be wrong as it was so long ago I heard about it
I think it was. It's been a while since I heard about it, as well.
I just recall my brother drinking orangeade all the time and brushing his teeth religiously 3 times a day and getting a cavity for his efforts. ---
